Over the years, politics has been misinterpreted, hated and rejected by so many people, both locally, nationally, internationally and globally. This is due to the conception and connotations, which certain people held against politics. On the other hand, the assertions may be true, due to the actions and activities of most of the political leaders across the globe. At the same time, this assertion might be proved wrong, as a result of the leadership strategy of those political leaders who understood what politics actually stand for. Thus, anyone can understand politics any how, depending on the leadership and governance of the involved leaders.
Nevertheless, today's content will be exploring through some of the Nigerian governors who has corrected this negative connotations which people held about politics. Hence, I shall be considering this content under the topic;
5 NIGERIAN GOVERNORS THAT HAS CORRECTED THE NEGATIVE POLITICAL CONNOTATIONS
Really, one of the common assertions against politics is that; "politics is a dirty game" This phrase alone makes many people to believe that ;
1. Politics is a do or die affair.
2. Politics is not meant for the good and faithful people.
3. Politics has nothing to do with transparency or honesty.
4. Politics must be connect with some negative aspects of life.
5. No one can maintain intergrity when it comes to politics.
6. Others believed that politics is all about deceive the people, get to the office and do as it pleases you.
All these are the reasons why so many people hated politics with passion.
Fortunately, the following Nigerian governors has proved these assertions wrong;
Dr. ALEX CHIOMA OTTI
Dr. Alex Otti, the fifth democratically elected governor of Abia State took the mantle of leadership from the former governor of the state, on the 29th May, 2023. Durring his inauguration speech, he stated, "In my move to make Abia what it supposed to be, I will not tolerate any incompetency and mediocrity." This statement of his, is still in the mind of so many Abians, including myself. Looking at his achievements so far, they proved that what he said was not just a promise, but a reality. This is reflected, in his dedication to see that he works with the professionals, in almost every aspect of his administration. Thus, a lot of projects that are being executed in the state is a clear evidence that Dr. Alex Otti (OFR), is a man of his words, unlike so many other political leaders. Hence, from the;
* Infrastructural and economic revitalization.
* Extensive road rehabilitation projects.
* Facilitation of commerce.
* Enhancement of the lives of the residence
* Revitalization of Aba, the states commercial hub.
* Implementation of Urban renewal projects.
* Elimination of wasteful spending.
* Repeal of lifelong pensions for former governors and their deputies.
* Introduction of policies to attract investment, support local businesses, and to stimulate economic growth, targeted at creating a more prosperous and self-reliant state economy, down to every other sectors, which I cannot cover within the scope of this blog content, all are not just an indication, but a verifiable prove that Dr Otti, is not like every other political leader. And has contributed in correction the negative political connotations of so many people. Atleast, governor Otti has proved to the world that politics can also allow transparency and honesty.
PROF. CHUKWUMMA SOLUDO
Prof Chukwumma Charles Soludo, the fifth governor of Anambra State, entered into office on 17th March, 2022. He is another Nigerian governor that have seemed to keep to his words during his inauguration. The parameter to measure the reliability and dependabilty of any political leader, is on his ability to keep to atleast 70% of his promises during his inauguration. Thus, this governor, in one of his statements on the day of his inauguration said, "My good people of Anambra, I will try to work hard every day, so that I will not disappiont you." Loking at the ongoing projects in the state, it is a proof that Prof Soludo is a man of his words. Actually, his administration is working so hard in order not to disappoint the good people of Anambra, nor put his party to shame. He has corrected the negative political connotation, by showing the people that politics meant for people who are steadfast, faithful and trusthworthy. This can be proved by the following facts;
* Implementation of policies to attract investors to Anambra, both in manufacturing and in agriculture.
* His pririotic action of infrastructural development, with extensive rehabilitation of roads and urban renewal projects.
* The investment in modern markets to support small businesses and improve trade.
* His focus in security with increased funding for law enforcement and community policing initiative.
These and many other developmental projects going on in the state, has proved that Prof Chukwumma Charles Soludo, is not just like every other politicians, hence has corrected the negative political connotations.
GOVERNOR BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU
Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu is the 15th Lagos state governor and has been in the office since 29th May 2019. Which I believed that he was re-elected by the people due to his tested and proven competency and trustworthiness in his first tenor. During his inauguration speech he said, "Lagos must again rise and help lead this nation to fuller progress and to a closer realization of the greatness that exists within all Nigerians." Looking at the works and projects that are going on in Lagos, you will understand with me that this governor is actually working towards this statement of his. And this is a prove that he is correcting the wrong political connotations; that no political leader can say the truth and stand by it. Most of the projects he is handling in Lagos, is a clear proof that he has the progress of Lagos in mind. People use to think that a political leader can only be good on his fisrt tenor, that the second tenor is; operation gather for your generation and don't mind the people, but Sanwo-olu, has proven this wrong. Therefore through;
* The launching of blue line rail.
* The ongoing red line project.
* The launching of Lagos state enterpreneurship trust fund to support small businesses and startups.
* The improvement of public health through commissioning of new hospitals and emergency response services.
* The introduction of smart classrooms and improved school facilities across Lagos state, he has made a clear difference in the political conception of many.
All these and many other intended projects of this governor, is a clear proof that he is among the Nigerian governors who have come to correct the negative political connotations.
GOVERNOR UBA SANI
* His focus on security, education, and economic empowerment, which should be the basic agenda of a reasonable leader.
* The expansion of the state's security architecture.
* His ability to work closely with the federal agencies to curb banditry and insurgence.
* Improvement of school infrastructure, providing modern facilities and employing more teachers to address shortages.
* Increased investment in vocational training to equip young people with marketable skills.
* Infrastructural development with road construction projects
* Improved urban planning and investments in public transportation to reduce transportation challenges.
All these has proven the fact that, Governor Sani Uba is not like every other governor, and is working towards correcting the negative political connotations.
GOVERNOR ABDULRAHMAN ABDULRAZAQ
The current governor of Kaduna state, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq entered office in 29th May, 2023 as the fourth democratic governor of the state. Even from his first tenor, he has remained steadfast in fulfilling his promises for the people of Kwara state, little wonder he was re-elected by the people. Recall that on 29th of May 2023, during his inuaguaration speech, the governor stated, "Distinguished Kwarans, we shall become more intentional in our efforts to improve healthy living through a cleaner environment." Now, looking at the works going on in Kwara state, you can be able to see by yourself that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has been able to keep to atleast 70% of those promises he made on the day of his inauguration, making him one of the governors that kept to their words, who has come to correct the negative political connotations. Among some of his achievements in the state so far, that can prove this fact are;
* Improvement in healthcare, which has made Kwara to become among the few states to secure accreditation for the training of intern pharmacists and nurses, thereby strengthening the workforce in the health sector.
* The educational revolutionalization through Kwara State Trust Fund to provide scholarships and Improved School Infrastructure across the state.
* Revolution and equipment of several hospitals, ensuring an improved access to quality medical care for it's residents.
* Prioritization of intrastructure with major road projects, rural electrification, and improved water supply.
These and other projects going on in the state, is a clear evidence that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has come to correct the negative political connotations.
I believe that there may be other governors who are still doing well in their different states, but the above five are doing marvelously and fantastically well. Hence, let every leader, in any level of government revisit his or her inauguration speech promises, If you have been able to fulfil up to 70% of those promises, then you are among the list. Remember that whatever you may promise the people during the campaign period, does not actually count before the people, but the ones you promised on the day of your inauguration count so much, people may record or write them down to see how honest you may be as their leader. Hence, the parameter to measure the honesty, intergrity, and trustworthiness of any leader, is his ability to keep to his inauguration speech promises. It therefore becomes paramount for other governors to follow the steps of the above listed splendiferously active governors, so that they will not just correct but change the negative political connotations, thereby shutting up the mouth of their oppositions.
